Layne Montgomery (of The Great American Novel) shares with us his second of three demo songs from his Guided by Voices cover project Alien Laynes. Below, he explains what this project is to him.
Come back next week for the third and final song from this set!
“I came to the soul-lightening realization recently that Guided By Voices have become my favorite band of all time (sorry to Sloan, Weezer, the Strokes, and the Beatles.) I love the drunken swagger, leg kicks, and sheer volume of their output (box sets, side projects and solo records included.) I’ve always enjoyed doing covers in my bedroom as I way to pass time, and (although I rarely finish any project I start) ALIEN LAYNES is the freshest (and most complete) one I’ve done. With GBV fever perhaps at its peak with the reunion tour and two new records (!!) on the way, it seemed like the right time to start letting some of these covers out of the cage. Of the three songs that my good friends at Based on Nothing are premiering, two come from the seminal record Alien Lanes (which, if you haven’t listened to GBV, is your starting point) and one from the earlier (and patchier) Vampire on Titus. It should also be noted that two of the songs were written by Tobin Sprout, who would be the Paul to Robert Pollard’s John, if John had written 100 times more songs than Paul.”
